STEAM Education at Mount Waverley North Primary School

STEAM education—encompassing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics—is a cornerstone of our curriculum at Mount Waverley North Primary School. This interdisciplinary approach not only enriches students’ understanding of these subjects but also fosters essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.

How STEAM Enhances Learning:
Students engage in hands-on projects where they apply knowledge from Science, Mathematics, Digital Technologies, and Design & Technologies to design and engineer solutions to real-world problems. This process encourages teamwork, perseverance, and iterative problem-solving as students test, refine, and perfect their projects.

Integration Across the Curriculum:
STEAM lessons are interwoven throughout the school year, aligning with key concepts taught in Science, Mathematics, Digital Technologies, and Design & Technology. Lessons take place in our well-equipped STEAM room and outdoor learning spaces, including our Kitchen Garden, Frog Bog, and oval.

Victorian Curriculum Alignment:
At Mount Waverley North Primary School, STEAM education is integrated at all levels, supported by the Victorian Curriculum for Science, which offers flexibility to create rigorous, relevant, and engaging learning experiences tailored to our diverse student body. Our dedicated STEAM teacher leverages a variety of learning opportunities, natural environments, and community resources to make learning both meaningful and connected to students' lives and society.

Hands-On Science:
Students participate in weekly science lessons featuring practical, hands-on experiments. These lessons, delivered through classroom investigations and specialized incursions, encourage students to hypothesiSe, experiment, and draw conclusions on a variety of scientific topics. The focus is on real-world applications related to survival, innovation, change, and discovery.

Facilities:
Our school boasts a well-equipped science room, stocked with a wide array of exciting and educational tools. These include microscopes, human body models, electrical circuitry equipment, and materials for building models and completing science or technology projects. This extensive array of resources ensures that students have the tools they need to explore and experiment in a safe, supportive environment.
