Music and performance are an important part of school life at Mount Waverley North Primary School. Students have opportunities to learn, perform, collaborate and develop their confidence, whether they are discovering music for the first time or extending an existing passion or talent.
Music is incorporated into our Performing Arts curriculum, with additional opportunities available through choirs, instrumental ensembles, performances and private music tuition.
Our aim is to provide different pathways into music so that students can participate at a level that suits their interests, experience and aspirations.
Performing Arts
Music forms an important part of our Performing Arts program.
Through curriculum-based learning, students explore elements of music, rhythm, movement and performance while developing creativity, confidence and an appreciation of the performing arts.
These experiences provide all students with opportunities to engage with music as part of their learning at MWNPS, regardless of whether they undertake private instrumental tuition.
School Productions & Performances
Performance is an important part of school life at MWNPS, with students provided with opportunities to perform for an audience and celebrate their learning throughout their primary school years.
Biennial Whole-School Production
Every two years, MWNPS comes together for our Biennial Whole-School Production, a major celebration of performing arts and one of the highlights of our school calendar.
Held at the Besen Centre, the production provides every student from Prep to Year 6 with an opportunity to be part of a large-scale performance experience in a professional theatre setting.
The production is presented on the same evening, with different performance opportunities designed for each stage of primary school:
- Prep students participate in their own special performance, providing an exciting and age-appropriate introduction to performing on stage.
- Students in Years 1–2 present their own performance, building confidence, teamwork and experience performing for a large audience.
- Students in Years 3–6 participate in the major theatrical production, incorporating acting, singing, dancing and ensemble performance.
- Students in Years 5–6 have opportunities to audition for larger acting, singing and character roles, taking greater responsibility within the production as our senior students.
There is a role for everyone
We recognise that performing on stage is not every student’s passion, and a successful production involves much more than the performers the audience sees.
Students can also explore behind-the-scenes and production roles, with opportunities to contribute to areas such as props, sets, scripts, lighting and sound.
This allows students with different interests and strengths to experience the many elements involved in bringing a theatrical production to life.
Throughout the production process, students learn about collaboration, creativity, responsibility and perseverance. They experience how performers, musicians, technicians, designers and backstage teams all need to work together towards a shared goal.
The result is much more than a performance. Our Biennial Whole-School Production is a community event, bringing together students, staff and families to celebrate creativity, achievement and the confidence of our students.
Whether taking centre stage, performing alongside their classmates or helping make the production happen behind the scenes, every student has an opportunity to contribute and belong.
School Choir
Our School Choir provides students who enjoy singing with an opportunity to come together, develop their vocal skills and experience performing as part of a group.
Choir is about much more than learning songs. Students develop confidence, listening skills, teamwork, performance skills and an understanding of how individual voices contribute to a larger ensemble.
Throughout the year, the Choir may perform at school events, assemblies and other special occasions, helping music become a visible and celebrated part of our school community.
Rock Band
Our School Rock Band provides students with the opportunity to experience contemporary music in an ensemble setting.
Students learn what it means to perform as part of a band, including listening to one another, keeping time, rehearsing collaboratively and understanding how different instruments and voices work together.
The Rock Band provides another pathway for students to extend their musical interests and develop the confidence to perform for an audience.
String Orchestra
Our String Orchestra brings together students learning string instruments and provides an opportunity to develop their skills through ensemble playing.
Students learn to listen and respond to other musicians, follow a conductor, maintain their individual part and contribute to the sound of the whole group.
Playing in an orchestra helps students develop musicianship, concentration, cooperation and confidence, while experiencing the enjoyment and sense of achievement that comes from making music with others.
Victorian State Schools Spectacular
MWNPS is proud to provide students with opportunities to participate in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular.
The Spectacular brings together students from Victorian government schools for a large-scale professional performance experience involving music, singing, dance and performance.
Participation provides students with a unique opportunity to rehearse towards a shared goal, work alongside students from other schools and experience the excitement and discipline involved in preparing for a major performance.
Opportunities and participation may vary from year to year depending on the school’s involvement in the production.
Private Music Tuition
For students wishing to further develop their musical skills, MWNPS facilitates access to private music tuition during the school day.
Private tutors provide individual or small-group lessons at the school, making instrumental tuition more accessible for families and allowing students to develop their skills within the familiar school environment.
Tuition is available in:
- piano
- guitar
- string
- drums.
Other instruments and voice tuition may also be arranged upon request, subject to tutor availability.
Private music tuition is an optional, fee-based service provided by private music tutors and is separate from the school’s Performing Arts curriculum.
Having tuition available onsite is another way MWNPS aims to support busy families by providing opportunities for students within the school environment and reducing the need to travel to separate lessons before or after school.
Interested in Music Tuition?
Families interested in private music tuition, including available instruments, lesson arrangements, current fees and tutor availability, are encouraged to contact the school office for further information.
Whether students are singing with the Choir, performing with the Rock Band or String Orchestra, participating in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular, learning an instrument or enjoying music through Performing Arts, we want students to experience the creativity, confidence, connection and enjoyment that comes from making music.
