At Mount Waverley North Primary School, we provide students with a broad range of opportunities to be active, develop their physical skills and experience the benefits of individual and team sport.
Alongside our Physical Education program, students participate in fitness, Fundamental Motor Skills, Perceptual Motor Program (PMP), athletics, swimming, interschool sport, games and other movement-based activities.
Across all of our sporting programs, the focus extends beyond competition. We encourage students to develop sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, resilience and confidence, while working towards their personal best.
Soccer Academy
MWNPS offers an optional Soccer Academy program during the school day on two afternoons each week.
The Soccer Academy is a paid program delivered by experienced coaches from Futbal First. Students who opt into the program attend Soccer Academy as an alternative to their regular class sport and fitness session or, in the junior years, PMP.
The program is designed for students with a range of abilities and experience. It is not about being the best athlete or soccer player. Instead, students learn about organised sport while progressively developing their soccer skills and working towards personal improvement.
Through Soccer Academy, students develop:
- soccer skills through structured and progressive coaching
- teamwork and communication
- sportsmanship and fair play
- leadership
- confidence and resilience
- an understanding of organised sport
- the ability to experience winning and losing respectfully
- individual goal setting and personal improvement.
MWNPS also offers after-school Soccer Academy sessions, including a girls-only session.
Families interested in Soccer Academy, including current fees, available sessions and registration information, are encouraged to contact the school office.
Class Sport, Fitness and PMP
Soccer Academy is optional. Students who do not participate continue with their regular class-based sport, fitness or Perceptual Motor Program (PMP).
Perceptual Motor Program (PMP)
In our junior years, students participate in a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) designed to develop the fundamental movement, coordination and body-awareness skills that provide an important foundation for physical activity and sport.
PMP involves students moving through structured activities and circuits that may include running, jumping, hopping, skipping, balancing, throwing, catching, kicking and movement through space. Activities are designed to develop skills progressively while giving students opportunities to practise at an appropriate level of challenge.
Through PMP, students develop:
- balance, coordination and body awareness
- gross motor skills
- hand-eye and foot-eye coordination
- spatial awareness and movement control
- Fundamental Motor Skills such as throwing, catching, kicking, running and jumping
- confidence when participating in physical activity
- listening, turn-taking and following instructions
- cooperation and participation with others.
Developing these skills in the early years helps students build the confidence and physical foundations needed to participate successfully in games, sport and other physical activities as they progress through primary school.
Sport and Fitness
Across other class sport and fitness sessions, students participate in a variety of activities according to their year level and the time of year. These may include Fundamental Motor Skills, team and cooperative games, athletics skills, cultural games, fitness activities and preparation for interschool sport.
Sessions are led by classroom teachers and provide all students with regular opportunities to be active, develop their skills, work with others and build positive attitudes towards physical activity.
Fitness Club
Our Fitness Club is a free, before-school program held every Wednesday morning and supervised by our Physical Education teacher.
Open to students across the school, Fitness Club provides a fun and welcoming way to start the day. Parents and carers are also welcome to join in, making it an opportunity for families to be active together and connect with other members of our school community.
Students and families participate in a variety of fitness, movement and game-based activities using our school oval and courts, with activities suitable for different ages and abilities. There is no cost to participate.
Fitness Club is part of our broader commitment to building a connected school community and supporting busy family life. We know families are often balancing work, school, extracurricular activities and multiple drop-offs and pick-ups throughout the week. By providing additional opportunities for children to be active and involved at school, we aim to make participation easier and more accessible.
It is one of the ways we bring more opportunities onto our school grounds, reducing the need for families to travel to another venue or commit to an additional cost, while giving students another chance to connect, be active and enjoy school life.
Students and their parents or carers are welcome to simply come along, get moving and enjoy an active start to Wednesday together.
Interschool Sport
The school Interschool Sport program allows all Years 5 & 6 students to compete against neighbouring schools in a range of summer and winter sports. The focus is on teamwork, building game-based knowledge and having fun! We are always proud of our school teams which regularly proceed to Division level and beyond, representing our school with sportsmanship and endeavour.
Swimming Program & Carnival
All MWNPS students participate in our annual swimming program, which supports the development of swimming skills, confidence and safety in and around water.
The program is currently held at two locations: Active Monash on Waverley Rd and on Clayton Rd.
Students in Years 3–6 also have opportunities to compete in our school swimming carnival, with eligible students progressing to higher levels of school sport competition.
Athletics Program & Cross Country
Students develop a range of athletics skills through our Physical Education and sporting programs, including running, jumping and throwing events.
Our House Athletics Carnival gives students the opportunity to represent their House, participate in a range of track and field events and strive towards their personal best.
Students also participate in our House Cross Country Carnival, with eligible students progressing to District competition and potentially further levels of School Sport Victoria competition.
Whether participating recreationally, representing their House, joining Soccer Academy or progressing through competitive school sport, our aim is for every student to experience participation, improvement, belonging and success through physical activity.
